My response to your presence

Pedestal

It has nothing to do with

placing you on a pedestal.

It’s more a matter of

delving into pure abstraction

in hopes of

explaining my emotional state

amidst the confusion

of all that doesn’t directly concern

the two of us,

But the difficulty of working

in a purely instinctive manner

is that the resultant sudden impulses

tend to expose a loved one

to what I would shelter her from…

that disconcerting connection

with the outside world

So as I try to get closer

to your essence

through artistic sensibility

I place your privacy under threat

by purifying you of everything

that is ordinary existence,

and ultimately,

consigning the lovely truth of you

into easily accessible words.

It has nothing to do with placing

you on a pedestal.

But if that’s what it takes.
